good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

during his presidency, bill clinton seized important opportunities on issues from welfare to free trade. he was a tireless champion of peace in the middle east. he used american power in the balkans to confront aggression and halt ethnic cleansing. and in all his actions and decisions, the american people sensed a deep empathy for the poor and the powerless. shortly before leaving office, president clinton said, "christ admonished us that our lives will be judged by how we do unto the least of our neighbors." throughout his career, bill clinton has done his best to live up to that standard. and americans respect him for it. at every stage of his remarkable life, president clinton has made and kept countless friends, who share in the joy of this day. and three people in particular have the largest part in this remarkable story. one day more than 30 years ago, inside the yale law library, a fellow student walked over to bill clinton and said, "if you're going to keep staring at me, and i'm going to keep staring back, we ought to at least know each other's name. mine's hillary rodham. what is yours?"that was a good day for both of them, and the beginning of a partnership unique in american history. so today, we honor the former first lady of arkansas, the former first lady of america, the united states senator from new york, senator hillary rodham clinton.

perhaps the clintons' greatest achievement is their daughter, who moved into the white house as a young girl, and left as an accomplished young lady. it's not easy to be a teenager in the white house, but it's a lot easier when you have a loving mother and a loving father that chelsea clinton had.

this magnificent presidential library, and the american life it celebrates, would not have been possible without the love and sacrifice of a special lady. among his heroes, president clinton always includes his mother, virginia kelley, "a working woman and a widow." virginia was there when her son took the oath of office, and we know that she would be incredibly proud of this day.

the story that began in a little house on hervey street in hope, arkansas is the kind of story that inspires people from every background, all over america. in this great nation, it is always possible for a child to go as far as their talent and vision can take them. visitors to this place will be reminded of the great promise of our country, and the dreams that came true in the life of our 42nd president. the william j. clinton presidential library is a gift to the future by a man who always believed in the future. and today, we thank him for loving and serving america.

a few years ago, i felt like i was stuck in a rut, so i decided to follow in the footsteps of the great american philosopher, morgan spurlock, and try something new for 30 days. the idea is actually pretty simple. think about something you’ve always wanted to add to your life and try it for the next 30 days. it turns out, 30 days is just about the right amount of time to add a new habit or subtract a habit — like watching the news — from your life.

there’s a few things i learned while doing these 30-day challenges. the first was, instead of the months flying by, forgotten, the time was much more memorable. this was part of a challenge i did to take a picture everyday for a month. and i remember exactly where i was and what i was doing that day. i also noticed that as i started to do more and harder 30-day challenges, my self-confidence grew. i went from desk-dwelling computer nerd to the kind of guy who bikes to work — for fun. even last year, i ended up hiking up mt. kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in africa. i would never have been that adventurous before i started my 30-day challenges.

i also figured out that if you really want something badly enough, you can do anything for 30 days. have you ever wanted to write a novel? every november, tens of thousands of people try to write their own 50,000 word novel from scratch in 30 days. it turns out, all you have to do is write 1,667 words a day for a month. so i did. by the way, the secret is not to go to sleep until you’ve written your words for the day. you might be sleep-deprived, but you’ll finish your novel. now is my book the next great american novel? no. i wrote it in a month. it’s awful. but for the rest of my life, if i meet john hodgman at a ted party, i don’t have to say, “i’m a computer scientist.” no, no, if i want to i can say, “i’m a novelist.”

(laughter)

so here’s one last thing i’d like to mention. i learned that when i made small, sustainable changes, things i could keep doing, they were more likely to stick. there’s nothing wrong with big, crazy challenges. in fact, they’re a ton of fun. but they’re less likely to stick. when i gave up sugar for 30 days, day 31 looked like this.

(laughter)

so here’s my question to you: what are you waiting for? i guarantee you the next 30 days are going to pass whether you like it or not, so why not think about something you have always wanted to try and give it a shot for the next 30 days.

thanks.

the word wealth always reminds people of money and the sayings or concepts related to money。 for example, “money talks”; “money makes the ghosts turn the mill”; “as birds die for food, so men die for wealth”; “the poor have no friends even though they live in the noisy downtown, while the rich have remote kinsfolk even if they live in the deep mountains”; “poverty chills ambition” “one cent short may put a hero in an awkward situation” etc, etc。。

in the 1980’ s, all shops were state-owned with marked prices。 you couldn’t buy what you wanted with even one cent short, so one cent could indeed embarrass a hero。 a popular song at that time started “i picked up one cent at the roadside, and i handed it over to the policeman…” but now no one cares to pick it up even if it were ten cents。

people’s reverence for money is expressed in varied ways。 the names of companies or stores are often “beer of wealth and honor”, “restaurant of wealth and rank” “store of the aristocrats” “hotel of fame and prestige” etc。 (even some people’s names have the meanings of “full of gold” or “great fortune”)。 at new year’s time, the god of wealth is worshiped and the picture of the god is covered with signs of money。 when a millionaire is walking in the street, people will show their profound respect even though they know very well that they can not get a cent from him。 the english film “the million-pound note” makes a most vivid revelation of this situation。 with the million pound note in hand, the hero has the privilege to buy on credit, or on loan and is even presented money from others。 it’s an idealized end of the story that the hero is still loved by his girl friend even after he lost his million-pound note。 however, without the million-pound note, they couldn’t have known each other。 it’s very difficult for people to make friends directly with beggars。

the song of “all good things must end” in a dream of the red mansions attacks the money worshipers by saying:

“all men long to be immortals

yet silver and gold they prize

and grub for money all their lives

till death seals up their eyes”

but when chen shih-yin tries to expound this song by analyzing the inconstancy of human relationships and the incomprehensible human heart, he has to say:

“while men with gold and silver by the chest

turn beggars, scorned by all and dispossessed”

the conclusion is that it doesn’t work without money。

in spite of the human civilizations over thousands of years, people can not deny the function of money。 this shows how important money is。 money plays a decisive role to individuals, to families and even to countries or nationalities。 otherwise, why is everyone, from doorkeepers to presidents, trying to earn as much as possible? why does every country need chancellors of the exchequer, who keep formulating and revising financial laws and regulations? how different it is to be a creditor nation and a debtor nation! the united states is playing the tyrant just because it is wealthy enough。 a poor man may cherish lofty aspirations, but will probably be beaten because of his poverty。 the afghanistan may have won a lot of sympathy, but how difficult it would be to live solely on charity。

of all ages and in every country, all kinds of corruption stem from money。 no matter how rough the man is, and in what despicable way he earned the money, he can grease the palms of or buy over some very decent officials or even intellectuals。 can you see how crucial a role money is playing? (a case in point is the bankrupt of the company)

some people or organizations like some religious groups claim that they have seen through the human vanity and can take money lightly, but to people’s puzzlement, they are also accumulating money, either to renovate the temples, or to regild buddha’s statues, in whatever pretexts。 they are not engaged in production, so they can only depend on the donations from the devout believers。 sometimes your sincerity relies on whether you donate and how much you donate。 do the monks care about money? the answer is affirmative。 what’s more, many monks are already provided with a salary。

we are living in a material world, and it’s really difficult to deny the function of money or wealth。 we need money for food, clothes, education, hospital, housing and transportation, etc。 there’s rarely anything that doesn’t need money。 what we can discuss now is not the importance of money, but whether money is almighty and whether more wealth can bring us more happiness。

Good afternoon, everybody. I just want to say a few words about the landmark vote that the House of Representatives is poised to(随时准备着) take today -- a vote that can bring us one step closer to making real the promise of quality, affordable(支付得起) health care for the American people.

For the better part of a year now, members of the House and the Senate have been working diligently(勤奋地) and constructively to craft legislation that will benefit millions of American families and millions of American businesses who urgently need it. For the first time ever, they've passed bills through every single committee responsible for reform. They've brought us closer than we have ever been to passing health insurance reform on behalf of the American people.

Now is the time to finish the job. The bill that the House has produced will provide stability and security for Americans who have insurance; quality, affordable options for those who don't; and lower costs for American families and American businesses. And as I've insisted from the beginning, it is a bill that is fully paid for and will actually reduce our long-term federal deficit(赤字,不足).

This bill is change that the American people urgently need. Don't just take my word for it. Consider the national groups who've come out in support of this bill on behalf of their members: The Consumers Union supports it because it will create -- and I quote -- "a more secure, affordable health care system for the American people."

The American Medical Association and the American Nurses Association support it on behalf of doctors and nurses and medical professionals who know firsthand what's broken in our current system, and who see what happens when their patients can't get the care they need because of insurance industry bureaucracies(官僚政治).

The National Farmers Union supports this bill because it will control costs for farmers and ranchers(牧场主), and address the unique challenges rural Americans face when it comes to receiving quality care.

And the AARP supports it because it will achieve the goal for which the AARP has been fighting for decades -- reducing the cost of health care, expanding coverage for America's seniors, and strengthening Medicare for the long haul.

Now, no bill can ever contain everything that everybody wants, or please every constituency(选区) and every district. That's an impossible task. But what is possible, what's in our grasp right now is the chance to prevent a future where every day 14,000 Americans continue to lose their health insurance, and every year 18,000 Americans die because they don't have it; a future where crushing costs keep small businesses from succeeding and big businesses from competing in the global economy; a future where countless dreams are deferred or scaled back because of a broken system we could have fixed when we had the chance.

What we can do right now is choose a better future and pass a bill that brings us to the very cusp(尖头,尖端) of building what so many generations of Americans have sought to build -- a better health care system for this country.

Millions of Americans are watching right now. Their families and their businesses are counting on us. After all, this is why they sent us here, to finally confront the challenges that Washington had been putting off for decades -- to make their lives better, to leave this country stronger than we found it.

I just came from the Hill where I talked to the members of Congress there, and I reminded them that opportunities like this come around maybe once in a generation. Most public servants pass through their entire careers without a chance to make as important a difference in the lives of their constituents and the life of this country. This is their moment, this is our moment, to live up to the trust that the American people have placed in us -- even when it's hard; especially when it's hard. This is our moment to deliver.

I urge members of Congress to rise to this moment. Answer the call of history, and vote yes for health insurance reform for America.

Good morning everyone!

My name is Jie Lidi. Today, my topic is: “Confidence”. As we all know, failure is the mother of success. But What I want to say is that success is thechild of confidence. Without confidence, things can become negative anduncomfortable. I remember, during an English class, I wanted to make a sentenceusing the word "listen". I should have said: "I listen to the Voice of America"but I was too nervous and said "I listen to the Noise of America". Everybody inthe class laughed. Since then I wanted to train myself to be confident. Now,confidence makes me brave and courageous. Take this speech for example. I wantedto enter this competition, but I would feel very embarrassed if I made mistakes.Just then, I thought about my dream. My dream is to become a scientist when Igrow up. If I am not confident, how can I overcome difficulties I face? If I amnot confident, how can I succeed in developing myself in the future? I will doit! Today, I am making a speech in public and I feel proud and confident!

I am sure, in the future, with confidence, I will go forward-alwaysforward. Confidence will make my dreams come true!

Thank you!

! I will succeed!

Good afternoon, everyone! My name is A.It's of great honour for me to stand here to talk to you I want to ask you a question. What do you think we cannot afford to lose …………ok!Then I will talk about my ideas about this topic. In my opinion,we cannot afford to lose dream.Yes!It's dream.Because It is the most important thing to make us strong enough to face with all difficulties in your life. Have you ever been thought about giving upor quitting when you are in troubleHave you ever been fed up with your life that is full of worries and totally at sea while talking about your dreamMaybe you have, but I don't think it's a wise lose your dream,my friends! It's not only where your power comes from, but also the hope of your life.

Dream is the beacon, without dream, there is no secure direction.Without direct, there is no life.

So we should take every effort to accomplish our dream.Don't let it becomes a it maybe just our dream, but some years later,it will become ture.

So come on,my friends, and I believe we all will gain victories. That's all, thank you!

Good morning everyone!

My name is Jie Lidi. Today, my topic is: “Confidence”. As we all know, failure is the mother of success. But What I want to say is that success is the child of confidence. Without confidence, things can becoenegative and uncofortable.I remember, during an English class, I wanted to make a sentence using the word "listen". I should have said: "I listen to the Voice of America" but I was too nervous and said "I listen to the Noise of America". Everybody in the class laughed. Since then I wanted to train myself to be confident. Now, confidence makes me brave and courageous. Take this speech for example. I wanted to enter this copetition, but I would feel very embarrassed if I made mistakes. Just then, I thought about my dream. My dream is to becoea scientist when I grow up. If I am not confident, how can I overcoedifficulties I face? If I am not confident, how can I succeed in developing myself in the future? I will do it! Today, I am making a speech in public and I feel proud and confident!

I am sure, in the future, with confidence, I will go forward-always forward. Confidence will make my dreams coetrue!

Thank you!

Never Lose the Vision of Reality

Good afternoon, Ladies and gentlemen,

My topic today is Never Lose the Vision of Reality. Talking about dreams and future, I would say, dreams should never be too far away from reality. Detaching from reality, lacking solid or practical actions, any future plan or dream project will be nothing short of daydreaming, or, at most well-intentioned thinking. Here I am reminded the year of 20xx, when 191 member states of the United Nations held a World Summit Conference, which made a declaration known as the Millennium Development Goals. The goals of 20xx, which every member state pledged to meet, were such as, elimination of hunger and poverty, drastic reduction in child mortality rates, reversing a spread of AIDS and other deadly diseases, etc. Now, six years later, almost half way to the final year of 20xx, do we see any signs of realizing these goalsToday, half the world- about three billion people, still live under two U.S. dollars a day; about 270 million children have no access to safe water, 11 million children die before they reach the age of five each year. Do we come to harness the spread of the AIDSThe answer is also “no”- and indeed AIDS is spreading faster and wider than ever before. What is even worse, with the wake of the Iraqi War, the nuclear crisis in Iran and unsettled situations in many places, the visions of us young people today are often limited- but the limited vision (that) we do have and care about every day

cannot change the conviction that this world does not seem to promise a very bright future before us. Who is to blame for all thisOf course, we can blame the government: how they… disappointing they all seem to be: in one moment they are pledging to build a better future for us, and the other moment they’re igniting wars, killing more innocent people. But don’t you think we ordinary folks should also take some responsibilities for, say, elimination of hunger and povertyWhen we are quickly rushing to schools, works, or places of entertainment, how many times do we stop just to hand over some food to the deprived on the streetsWhen we are reading newspaper, browsing for news about what is going on in this world, how often do we stop to think about actual ways that we can do to help the people who’re suffering from various disastrous situationsIn fact, how much have we done to help the people who are in need just around usDreams are certainly beautiful and indispensable in our life, for they give us inspiration and motivation. Future plans are certainly necessary, for they provide us with goals and guides. But what is most beautiful and important is an action on a day-to-day basis. In order to realize our dreams or make our future goals realized, we need to put our words into deeds and base our vision on reality. In other words, while human beings should be, first and foremost, idealists and thinkers, we should also be, and all the more, realists and practical doers.

Thank you.

我们可以安排listen and do,listen and point,look and say,flash and say等操作简单,但具有检查性质的游戏。

Who is missing?Who is fast?

Last year, Mothers Day spending on brunches, jewelry, salon appointments, flowers and greeting cards topped $20 billion, according to the National Retail Federation. And no doubt retailers hope to meet that amount this year too. Brands like American Greetings and Kay Jewelers, a Mothers Day advertising regular, portray the holiday, and therefore motherhood, as an event for young women doted on by attentive husbands and young children[took out the video ref since that wasnt an example of mothers being doted on]. But for many, both the holiday and the reality are as much about being a mother as they are about having, and caring for, their own mothers. And mothers taking care of mothers need more than mimosas and manicures to cope with life in the sandwich generation.

good morning ladies and gentlemen:

the title of my speech today is “the doors that are open to us ”。

the other day my aunt paid me a visit. she was overjoyed. “i got thehighest mark in the mid-term examination!” she said. don't be surprised! my auntis indeed a student; to be exact, a college student at the age of 45.

last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year,full-time management course in a college. “this was the wisest decision i haveever made,” she said proudly like a teenage girl. to her, college is always aright place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.

“compared with the late 70s,” she says, “now college students have manydoors.” my aunt cannot help but recall her first college experience in 1978 whencollege doors began to be re-opened after the cultural revolution. she wasassigned to study engineering despite her desire to study chinese literature, and a few years later, the government sent her to work in a tv factory.

i was shocked when she first told me how she (had) had no choice in hermajor and job. look at us today! so many doors are open to us! i believe therehave never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we havetoday. and my aunt told me that we should reach our goals by grasping all theseopportunities.

the first door i see is the opportunity to study different kinds ofsubjects that interest us. my aunt said she was happy to study management, butshe was also happy that she could attend lectures on ancient chinese poetry andon shakespearean drama. as for myself, i am an english major, but i may also goto lectures on history. to me, if college education in the past emphasizedspecialization, now, it emphasizes free and well-rounded development of eachindividual. so all the fine achievements of human civilization are open tous.

the second door is the door to the outside world. learning goes beyondclassrooms and national boundaries. my aunt remembers her previous college daysas monotonous and even calls her generation “frogs in a well.” but today, as theworld becomes a global village, it is important that our neighbors and we beopen-minded to learn with and from each other. i have many fellow internationalclassmates, and i am applying to an exchange program with a university abroad.as for my aunt, she is planning to get an mba degree in the united kingdom whereher daughter, my cousin, is now doing her master's degree in biochemistry. weare now taking the opportunity to study overseas, and when we come back, we'llput to use what we have learnt abroad.

the third door is the door to lifelong learning. as new ideas appear allthe time, we always need to acquire new knowledge, regardless of our age.naturally, my aunt herself is the best example. many of my aunt's contemporariessay that she is amazingly up-to-date for a middle-aged woman. she simplyresponds, “age doesn't matter. what matters is your attitude. you may think it'sstrange that i am still going to college, but i don't think i'm too old tolearn.” yes, she is right. since the government removed the age limit forcollege admissions in _, there are already some untraditional students, sittingwith us in the same classrooms. like these people, my aunt is old but she isvery young in spirit. with her incredible energy and determination, she embodiesboth tradition and modernity.

the doors open to us also pose challenges. for instance, we are faced withthe challenge of a balanced learning, the challenge of preserving our finetradition while learning from the west, and the challenge of learningcontinuously while carrying heavy responsibilities to our work and family. so,each door is a test of our courage, ability and judgment, but with the supportof my teachers, parents, friends and my aunt, i believe i can meet the challengehead on. when i reach my aunt's age, i can be proud to say that i have walkedthrough dozens of doors and will, in the remainder of my life, walk through manymore. possibly i will go back to college, too.

thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.
