If you put a buzzard in a pen six to eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.

The ordinary bat that flies around at night, who is a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is to shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

A bumblebee if dropped into an open tumbler will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.

In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, not realizing that the answer is right there above them.

Hi. I'm here to talk to you about the importance of praise, admiration and thank you, and having it be specific and genuine.

And the way I got interested in this was, I noticed in myself, when I was growing up, and until about a few years ago, that I would want to say thank you to someone, I would want to praise them, I would want to take in their praise of me and I'd just stop it. And I asked myself, why? I felt shy, I felt embarrassed. And then my question became, am I the only one who does this? So, I decided to investigate.

I'm fortunate enough to work in the rehab facility, so I get to see people who are facing life and death with addiction. And sometimes it comes down to something as simple as, their core wound is their father died without ever saying he's proud of them. But then, they hear from all the family and friends that the father told everybody else that he was proud of him, but he never told the son. It's because he didn't know that his son needed to hear it.

So my question is, why don't we ask for the things that we need? I know a gentleman, married for 25 years, who's longing to hear his wife say, "Thank you for being the breadwinner, so I can stay home with the kids," but won't ask. I know a woman who's good at this. She, once a week, meets with her husband and says, "I'd really like you to thank me for all these things I did in the house and with the kids." And he goes, "Oh, this is great, this is great." And praise really does have to be genuine, but she takes responsibility for that. And a friend of mine, April, who I've had since kindergarten, she thanks her children for doing their chores. And she said, "Why wouldn't I thank it, even though they're supposed to do it?"

So, the question is, why was I blocking it? Why were other people blocking it? Why can I say, "I'll take my steak medium rare, I need size six shoes," but I won't say, "Would you praise me this way?" And it's because I'm giving you critical data about me. I'm telling you where I'm insecure. I'm telling you where I need your help. And I'm treating you, my inner circle, like you're the enemy. Because what can you do with that data? You could neglect me. You could abuse it. Or you could actually meet my need.

And I took my bike into the bike store-- I love this -- same bike, and they'd do something called "truing" the wheels. The guy said, "You know, when you true the wheels, it's going to make the bike so much better." I get the same bike back, and they've taken all the little warps out of those same wheels I've had for two and a half years, and my bike is like new. So, I'm going to challenge all of you. I want you to true your wheels: be honest about the praise that you need to hear. What do you need to hear? Go home to your wife -- go ask her, what does she need? Go home to your husband -- what does he need? Go home and ask those questions, and then help the people around you.

And it's simple. And why should we care about this? We talk about world peace. How can we have world peace with different cultures, different languages? I think it starts household by household, under the same roof. So, let's make it right in our own backyard. And I want to thank all of you in the audience for being great husbands, great mothers, friends, daughters, sons. And maybe somebody's never said that to you, but you've done a really, really good job. And thank you for being here, just showing up and changing the world with your ideas.

In the flood of darkness, hope is the light. It brings comfort, faith, andconfidence. It gives us guidance when we are lost, and gives support when we areafraid. And the moment we give up hope, we give up our lives. The world we livein is disintegrating into a place of malice and hatred, where we need hope andfind it harder. In this world of fear, hope to find better, but easier said thandone, the more meaningful life of faith will make life meaningful.

Once there were two mice. They were friends. One mouse lived inthe country; the other mouse lived in the city. After many years the Countrymouse saw the City mouse; he said, "Do come and see me at my house in thecountry." So the City mouse went. The City mouse said, "This food is not good, and your house is not good. Why do you live in a hole in the field? You shouldcome and live in the city. You would live in a nice house made of stone. Youwould have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in thecity."

The Country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. It was a very goodhouse. Nice food was set ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eatthey heard a great noise. The City mouse cried, " Run! Run! The cat is coming!"They ran away quickly and hid.

After some time they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said,"I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For itis nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid."

good morning, ladies and gentlemen. i’d like to share my teaching dream with you. but before that, i want to say something about the beginning of this dream. in march this year, three teachers from australia came to our school. during the meeting, we exchanged a lot about education. i found that though we have almost the same teaching philosophy, we have different routines. what impressed me most was that their schools end at 3:00 in the afternoon and have no night classes. i can’t tell which kind of routine is better, but the sharp contrast made me think about a better education. the following is a dreamy school in my mind, in which there is no pressure but pleasure.

in this school, the buildings are well designed, close to nature. in the morning, children can read while enjoying the beautiful sunrise. in the evening, they can exercise by the lake reflecting the amazing sunset. in the spring, they can go to the wild, lie on the lawn, and watch the kite flying in the blue sky. in the summer, they can go to the forest, live in a cabin, and listen to the rhythm of the rain. …

students are free but polite and they respect each other. they can leave at 4:00 every afternoon, or perhaps earlier. they have the freedom to organize time. they can go to the library, go to the lab, the computer rooms or the playground. they’re self-motivated and have a strong thirst for knowledge. and there are no frequent exams and rankings. students won’t be forced to wear uniforms everyday, and there is no required hair style. everyday is so colorful that they are looking forward to the next day when going to bed at night,

in short, in this school, the principal is satisfied, the teachers are happy and the students are joyful. that’s my dream.

Who are we? That is the first question. It’s a question that’s almostimpossible to answer.

But we all agree that one’s busy or daily self is not quite one’s realself. We’re quite sure that we’ve lost something in the course of just makingour living.。

A crowd is watching a person running about looking for something in afield, and a wise man asks, “What has that person lost?” Someone may guess awatch, another a diamond ring. When everyone has guessed, the wise man who likeeveryone else there has no idea, says, “I’ll tell you one thing for sure. He’slost some breath.”

And no one can deny that he’s right. The point is that we often forget ourtrue selves in pursuit of things that are external1 to us, like a birdforgetting its own danger in pursuit of a mantis, which in turn forgets its owndanger in pursuit of some other prey.

It well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the mostsubordinate positions。 Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had aserious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their career。They were introduced to the broom, and spent the first hours of their businesslives sweeping out the office。 I notice we have janitors and janitresses now inoffices, and our young men unfortunately ms that salutary branch of businesseducation。 But if by chance the professional sweeper absent any morning, the boywho has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try h handat the broom。 The other day a fond fashionable mother in Michigan asked a youngman whether he had ever seen a lady sweep in a room so grandly as her Prcilla。He said no, he never had ,and the mother was gratified beyond measure, but thensaid he ,after a pause, “What I should like to see her do sweep out a room” Itdoes not hurt the newest er to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one ofthose sweepers myself。

Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, myadvice to you “aim high”。 I would not give a fig for the young man who does notalready see himself the partner or the head of an important firm。 Do not restcontent for a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or foreman, or generalmanager in any concern, no matter how extensive。 Say to yourself ,“My place atthe top。” Be king in your dreams。

And here the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate yourenergy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you areengaged。 Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on that line, to leadin it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most aboutit。

The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, whichmeans that they have scattered their brains also。 They have investments in th,or that, or the other, here there, and everywhere。 “Don't put all your eggs inone basket。” all wrong。 I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and thenwatch that basket。” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not oftenfail。 It easy to watch and carry the one basket。 It trying to carry too manybaskets, which break most eggs in th country。 He who carries three baskets mustput one on h head, which apt to tumble and trip him up。 One fault of theAmerican businessman lack of concentration。

To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room;do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorsebeyond your surplus cash fund; make the firm's interest yours; break ordersalways to save owners; concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, and watchthat basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, be not impatient, for asEmerson says, “no one can cheat you out of ultimate success but yourselves。”

An old woman had a cat. The cat was very old; she could not run quickly, and she could not bite, because she was so old. One day the old cat saw a mouse;she jumped and caught the mouse. But she could not bite it; so the mouse got outof her mouth and ran away, because the cat could not bite it.

Then the old woman became very angry because the cat had not killed themouse. She began to hit the cat. The cat said, "Do not hit your old servant. Ihave worked for you for many years, and I would work for you still, but I am tooold. Do not be unkind to the old, but remember what good work the old did whenthey were young."

He gets a goodsalary, but he always borrows money from his friends and never pays it back.Harry saw me and came and sat at the same table. He has never borrowed moneyfrom me. While he was eating, I asked him to lend me &2. To my surprise, hegave me the money immediately. 'I have never borrrowed any money from you,'Harry said,'so now you can pay for my dinner!'
