It's nice to be back at Princeton. I find it difficult to believe that it's been almost 11 years since I departed these halls for Washington. I'll extend my best wishes to the seniors later, but first I want to congratulate the parents and families here. As a parent myself, I know that putting your kid through college these days is no walk in the park. Some years ago I had a colleague who sent three kids through Princeton even though neither he nor his wife attended this university. He and his spouse were very proud of that accomplishment, as they should have been. But my colleague also used to say that, from a financial perspective, the experience was like buying a new Cadillac every year and then driving it off a cliff. I should say that he always added that he would do it all over again in a minute. This is indeed an impressive and appropriate setting for a commencement. I am sure that, from this lectern, any number of distinguished spiritual leaders have ruminated on the lessons of the Ten Commandments. I don't have that kind of confidence, and, anyway, coveting your neighbor's ox or donkey is not the problem it used to be, so I thought I would use my few minutes today to make Ten Suggestions, or maybe just Ten Observations, about the world and your lives after Princeton. Please note, these points have nothing whatsoever to do with interest rates. My qualification for making such suggestions, or observations, besides having kindly been invited to speak today by President Tilghman, is the same as the reason that your obnoxious brother or sister got to go to bed later--I am older than you. 1. The poet Robert Burns once said something about the best-laid plans of mice and men ganging aft agley, whatever "agley" means. A more contemporary philosopher, Forrest Gump, said something similar about life and boxes of chocolates and not knowing what you are going to get. They were both right. Life is amazingly unpredictable; any 22-year-old who thinks he or she knows where they will be in 10 years, much less in 30, is simply lacking imagination. Look what happened to me: A dozen years ago I was minding my own business teaching Economics 101 in Alexander Hall and trying to think of good excuses for avoiding faculty meetings. Then I got a phone call... In case you are skeptical of Forrest Gump's insight, here's a concrete suggestion for each of the graduating seniors. Take a few minutes the first chance you get and talk to an alum participating in his or her 25th, or 30th, or 40th reunion--you know, somebody who was near the front of the P-rade. Ask them, back when they were graduating 25, 30, or 40 years ago, where they expected to be today. If you can get them to open up, they will tell you that today they are happy and satisfied in various measures, or not, and their personal stories will be filled with highs and lows and in-betweens. But, I am willing to bet, those life stories will in almost all cases be quite different, in large and small ways, from what they expected when they started out. This is a good thing, not a bad thing; who wants to know the end of a story that's only in its early chapters? 2. Does the fact that our lives are so influenced by chance and seemingly small decisions and actions mean that there is no point to planning, to striving? Not at all. Whatever life may have in store for you, each of you has a grand, lifelong project, and that is the development of yourself as a human being. Your family and friends and your time at Princeton have given you a good start. What will you do with it? Will you keep learning and thinking hard and critically about the most important questions? Will you become an emotionally stronger person, more generous, more loving, more ethical? Will you involve yourself actively and constructively in the world? Many things will happen in your lives, pleasant and not so pleasant, but, paraphrasing a Woodrow Wilson School adage from the time I was here, "Wherever you go, there you are." 3. The concept of success leads me to consider so-called meritocracies and their implications. We have been taught that meritocratic institutions and societies are fair. Putting aside the reality that no system, including our own, is really entirely meritocratic, meritocracies may be fairer and more efficient than some alternatives. But fair in an absolute sense? Think about it. A meritocracy is a system in which the people who are the luckiest in their health and genetic endowment; luckiest in terms of family support, encouragement, and, probably, income; luckiest in their educational and career opportunities; and luckiest in so many other ways difficult to enumerate--these are the folks who reap the largest rewards. The only way for even a putative meritocracy to hope to pass ethical muster, to be considered fair, is if those who are the luckiest in all of those respects also have the greatest responsibility to work hard, to contribute to the betterment of the world, and to share their luck with others. As the Gospel of Luke says (and I am sure my rabbi will forgive me for quoting the New Testament in a good cause): "From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded" (Luke 12:48, New Revised Standard Version Bible). 4. Who is worthy of admiration? The admonition from Luke--which is shared by most ethical and philosophical traditions, by the way--helps with this question as well. Those most worthy of admiration are those who have made the best use of their advantages or, alternatively, coped most courageously with their adversities. I think most of us would agree that people who have, say, little formal schooling but labor honestly and diligently to help feed, clothe, and educate their families are deserving of greater respect--and help, if necessary--than many people who are superficially more successful. 5. Since I have covered what I know about sociology, I might as well say something about political science as well. In regard to politics, I have always liked Lily Tomlin's line, in paraphrase: "I try to be cynical, but I just can't keep up." We all feel that way sometime. Actually, having been in Washington now for almost 11 years, as I mentioned, I feel that way quite a bit. Ultimately, though, cynicism is a poor substitute for critical thought and constructive action. Sure, interests and money and ideology all matter, as you learned in political science. But my experience is that most of our politicians and policymakers are trying to do the right thing, according to their own views and consciences, most of the time. If you think that the bad or indifferent results that too often come out of Washington are due to base motives and bad intentions, you are giving politicians and policymakers way too much credit for being effective. Honest error in the face of complex and possibly intractable problems is a far more important source of bad results than are bad motives. For these reasons, the greatest forces in Washington are ideas, and people prepared to act on those ideas. Public service isn't easy. 6. Having taken a stab at sociology and political science, let me wrap up economics while I'm at it. Economics is a highly sophisticated field of thought that is superb at explaining to policymakers precisely why the choices they made in the past were wrong. About the future, not so much. However, careful economic analysis does have one important benefit, which is that it can help kill ideas that are completely logically inconsistent or wildly at variance with the data. This insight covers at least 90 percent of proposed economic policies.6、经济学是颇具诡辩性的思维领域，她在解释决策者以往所犯错误方面显得很崇高，但在预测未来时，则不仅如此。然而，谨慎的经济分析确有重要益处，她能去除那些不合逻辑或与数据不符的想法，这对90%的经济政策建议有影响。
7. I'm not going to tell you that money doesn't matter, because you wouldn't believe me anyway. In fact, for too many people around the world, money is literally a life-or-death proposition. But if you are part of the lucky minority with the ability to choose, remember that money is a means, not an end. 9. I spoke earlier about definitions of personal success in an unpredictable world. I hope that as you develop your own definition of success, you will be able to do so, if you wish, with a close companion on your journey. In making that choice, remember that physical beauty is evolution's way of assuring us that the other person doesn't have too many intestinal parasites. Don't get me wrong, I am all for beauty, romance, and sexual attraction--where would Hollywood and Madison Avenue be without them? But while important, those are not the only things to look for in a partner. The two of you will have a long trip together, I hope, and you will need each other's support and sympathy more times than you can count. 10. Call your mom and dad once in a while. A time will come when you will want your own grown-up, busy, hyper-successful children to call you. Also, remember who paid your tuition to Princeton.10、时不时的给父母去个电话。早晚有一天，你希望自己长大成人的、工作繁忙的、超级成功的孩子给你来个电话，再者，请记着谁供养你上的大学。
Those are my suggestions. They're probably worth exactly what you paid for them. But they come from someone who shares your affection for this great institution and who wishes you the best for the future.

Success is a Feeling
Everyone wants success. But what is success? Generally, people think success is a great deal of money, high position, academic
achievement, and so on. However, most of these people never really define what success means to them. In my opinion, success is a feeling, which makes you happy and content.
Success is a feeling, that means success is not considered as big or small, high or low. It is just a good mood from your heart. Maybe passing a final test is a success for a student, learning to walk is a success for a little child, marrying a beautiful girl is a success for a lad, signing a contract is a success for a company. Success varies from individual to group.
Success is a feeling, that means success is changing since your childhood. While you were a little child, you thought it was a success that your parents finally bought you lovely toys after you begged again and again. Success is the feeling you had when you were told that you won the contest. After graduation, you started working. You were successful when you finished a complicated task very well and you were praised. When married, maybe a happy marriage and a happy family meant success for you. When your child grew up, you hoped he or she attend a famous university or go abroad to study or work, at that time you considered that was your success. When you were old enough and couldn't work at all, success was a feeling that your children and grandchildren came to see you from a long distance. Actually, success always accompanied you in your growth.
However, we have to admit that you can't be successful all the time. We always meet many difficulties on the way to success. The more difficult it is, the much happier we are when we succeed.
To be successful, we should have a clear aim and then try our best to reach it. Wherever you go, whatever you are, your success belongs to yourself. It is a good feeling that you love it very much, and it really can make you laugh from the heart.

New Year‘s Day is one of important days for many people in the world duringthe year. Most people spend the New Year‘s Day in hotels. January 1st isconsidered as the New Year‘s Day. Most companies, shops, school, and governmentoffices are closed during that time. People prepare for New Year‘s Day from lateDecember. First, people spend a few days to clean their houses completely. Somefamilies then put up some new painting from November to be sent in January. TheNew Year‘s meal is also prepared from the end of December. During the New Year‘sDay, people usually do not cook and relax at home. China is faced with some enormous challenges as it enters the 21st century. In order to ensure the prosperity of our nation and its future generations we must confront and ultimately solve these challenges.
Some of the more pressing issues facing China are universal. These include environmental degradation, over population andthe effects of globalization.
To overcome some of the things we need to implement include:
Enhancing our scientific and industrial technologies in such areas as IT, Bio- tech, AI and Cybernetics.
Further develop public infrastructure in under developed regions.
Promote education reform at all levels.
Introduce sustainable development initiatives.
The implementation of free trade agreement between China and ASEAN.
The benefit to China in introducing these initiatives will be significant and far-reaching. It is important to realize that these initiatives need to filter down through all elements of the society in China. For instance, cutting edge technologies and intellectual properties; the development of e-commerce based economy; an education system that encourages innovation and creativity; increased foreign investment; higher living standards; more efficient use of natural resources.
It is important for us to realize these reforms are both essential and necessary. These will help China to fulfill its vast and unrealized potential on the world stage. It will also contribute more to a globalized world of the new century.
As for the future our task is not to foresee but to enable.
Although winter means cold weather, I love it all the same. I think winteris a beautiful season, especially when it snows. Snowflakes fall down naughtily.They fall on branches of trees, on roofs of houses and on wheat fields. Soon thewhole earth will be dressed in white. Everything is shining in the sun. Everytime it snows, I will remember an old saying, "Winter has come, can spring befar away?"

Today I would like to talk about current environment situations which youcan see all over the world. While we are pursuing better ways of lives, moreproblems we are also making. Sometimes we only notice a unilateral aspect of thematter while ignoring its various functions. This kind of negligence, however,may cause serious problems that could be devastating.
It is said that one false move may lose the game. This is proved in ourdaily life obviously. As the economy is growing rapidly day after day,manufacturers are looking for more opportunities to gain numerous profit. Toearn more money, one way is to decrease the cost of the products. They movetheir factories to developing countries which can not only benefit them muchmore profit than before, but also those countries welcome them since they canhelp increase the countries’ GDP.
While it seems we can gain a lot from building factories to produceproducts, the shortcomings of these buildings are becoming obvious. Though atthe beginning, those developing countries did gain a lot of profit. As timepasses, people living surround the factories deposit industrial waste into theriver which directly leads to the influence of human’s lives. Fish died, birdsdisappeared, people moved, and we couldn’t imagine what would come next. Theseindustries also use lots of resources to carry on their production. Largeamounts of carbon dioxide are discharged, we all know the consequence of that,global warming—as one of the most essential environmental problems in the world,is becoming more and more serious currently. That the local government ignoredwas that these factories damaged their environment without any punishment butreception! They didn’t notice the negative aspect on this investment. What apity!
In summary, nowadays, businessmen are destroying our motherland—earth forthemselves. What should we do in this situation? Ignore them or try to take someactions on it? I believe all of us will choose the latter, right? So just do it,nothing is impossible.

We have been told that never put off until tomorrowwhat you can do today since childhood. However,there are still many people who like putting off thethings that should do today until tomorrow.Theyhave no plans for their work and their time. As aresult, they will not accomplish their goals in theend. For example, one Sunday I felt so tired after having a football match that I did not finishmy homework even at night. I thought I could get up earlier to go to school the next morningso that I could finish my homework before class. But the next morning I was not able to get toschool in time because of the traffic jam. I was punished by the teacher. It taught me a lesson.From then on I made a determination that I would never put off anything important until thenext day. Please remember: Work today, for you don’t know how much you may be hinderedtomorrow. Seize the present day，cherish every minute you have now and trust the tomorrowas little as possible.
The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West.

take. take. take. the relationship between a mother and a child always seems to follow such a pattern. i know my mother is always there for me, providing me with everything i need; from food to clothing, from tuition to pocket money. i never thought twice about all she did until one day she said, "will there be a time that you'll say you have taken enough from me? "
like a child endlessly asking, we humans, throughout history, have been continually demanding what we desire from nature. we enjoy the comfort and beauty of our furniture, yet we never bother to think about the serious soil erosion caused by deforestation. we take it for granted that we must warm ourselves in winter times, yet we seldom realize the burning away of precious natural resources. we appreciate all the prosperity from the development of modern industry, yet few would give the slightest consideration to the global air and water pollution caused by industrial wastes. our ruthless exploitation has permanently impaired our mother earth. as we tragically learned from last summer's floods. we cannot continue our carelessness.
finally, standing here at the threshold of the 21st century, we cannot help thinking of our posterity. nature is not only the mother of the present generation, but also the mother of the generations to come. how severely our descendents will criticize us if we leave them a barren and lifeless mother? how much more they will appreciate us if we give them a world of harmony to inherit? let us start respecting and caring for nature from now on. let us start the campaign of.
In the end of the year, people held many activities to celebrate andwelcome the New Year. In my school, we held a New Year party every year.Students like taking part in it very much, because it is really funny. Thisyear, I dance with my classmates. We prepare for it a month ago. Our teacherhelps us a lot. We work very hard to dance it well. Now, tomorrow is the partytime. I am sure we will be great in the party.

There is a fable that a man caught a young eagle in an eagle's nest on the top of a high mountain. He took the young eagle home and kept it in a chicken cage. The young eagle pecks, plays and rests with the chicken every day. He thinks he is also a chicken. When the chicken grows up, its wings are plump. The master wanted to train it into a falcon, but because it was mixed with chickens all day, it had become a chicken and had no desire to fly at all. Everybody will meet all kinds of difficulties during their lives, of course, they are willing to accept success, but the fact is that no one can win all the time, they will meet failure now and then. Fail is an unpleasant thing to face, people treat fail a bad thing. While for me, I think we can learn from failure and be a better man.

Everyone is afraid of facing failure, because failure brings them the sense of frustration. When facing failure, people choose to avoiding talking about it, they feel that they will be looked down upon by others. Indeed, no one likes to failure anything, they want to be successful all the time.

If people change their idea about failure, they can see the positive side. Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is always an exciting day in New Year Eve as the majority of people in the world are in very good mood of celebrating New Year. There are numerous New Year parties around the globe where many children are re-united with their families, young couples are together with their newborns, grandparents are taking their opportunities to spend some quality time with their own children as well as grandchildren. And the list goes on and on.
Just what exactly is New Year Eve? In my own view, I think there are two sets of meaning.
First, New Year Eve represents hope and a new start of the year. Hope is important to mankind. The symbolic meaning encourages us to put all our bad luck behind us as we look forward to a fresh start from the first day of the year.
Second, New Year Eve represents bonding between mankind. This important day grants all of us a chance to stay close to someone we love dearly. As we spend time with them, perhaps, we ask them how they are doing lately, or we find other ways to show someones how much we care for them.
What else do we get out of New Year Eve? Joy is the feel good factor. It means we enjoy being with someone. And joy is something that money can not buy in this world.
