The Flood

Towards the end of the Age of Bronze the human world became very cruel.

Men grew hungry,impolite and ungodly.Neither rightn or law was respected any longer,and the rule of hospitality was forgotten.Dressed up in human form,Zeus visited Arcadia andThessaly,and disliked the deadly wrongs of men .He decidedto clear the earth of them all.Without hesitation he released therainy south wind and called upon the heartless Poseidon to help.Soon the whole world sank in a vast ocean, and the entire humanrace disappeared in the unheard of flood,all but two poor Thessalians .

These were an old childless couple,kind and faithful and contented with life.The man was called Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha.Son of Prometheus,Deucalion had been warned beforehand by his father of the coming flood and made himself a hugechest.When the roaring flood came the couple hid themselves init and floated for nine days until it touched land again on Mt Parnassus.

The once active world presented a frightening sight.It was all death and ruin.Feeling lonely and unsafe,the old coupleprayed to the gods for help.A sage instructed them to cast the bones of their mother about .The son of the wise Titan, havingguessed the true meaning of the mysterious command, started throwing stones behind him. A miracle occurred. The stonesthat the man cast became men;the stones that the woman threwturned into women.Since then,people appeared on the land again.The Heroic Age had begun.

A Fox once saw a Crow fly off with a piece of cheese in its beak and settle on a branch of a tree. ‘That’s for me, as I am a Fox,’ said Master Reynard, and he walked up to the foot of the tree. ‘Good-day, Mistress Crow,’ he cried. ‘How well you are looking to-day: how glossy your feathers; how bright your eye. Long ago, there lived a huge monster. The monster looked like a human, but had a large body and much hair. His eye was in the middle of his forehead.

People were really afraid of this monster. That is because the monster ate up people. The people did not go neat the woods where the monster lived.

One day, a young hunter went hunting in the woods where the monster lived. He did not know that the monster lived there. He ran into the monster.

The brave hunter took out his arrow1 and shot2 the monster. The monster did not feel any pain and attacked the hunter. "How come he got shot, but he is alright..." The hunter shot a few more arrows,but the monster was not injured3 at all. The hunter only had one arrow left.

"That monster has to have a weak spot. Right! It must be that eye." The hunter shot his last arrow to the monster's eye. The monster was hit. It screamed and fell. The hunter barely4 killed the monster and realized it was the monster that people feared.

"This monster has to be burned so it won't ever bother people again." The hunter made a fire and turned the monster into ashes. Suddenly, a strong wind came and the ashes turned into an insect.

The insect attacked the hunter and began sucking5 his blood. The hunter ran away from the insect. The ashes became a mosquito6 that still bothers us on a hot summer day.

They consulted with each other, saying, "Every person has seven apertures4 (eyes, nose, ears and mouth) to see, hear, eat, and breathe, but Hun Dun does not have any. Then they drilled an aperture3 each day, and on the seventh day, they completed the seven apertures but Hun Dun died.
